For some, you may be asking what is Scope 1 and Scope 2 all about, how do we calculate it, and how do we get these measures into our plan?
As most of the founding members of ARIES repaired accident damaged cars for a living - and some still do - we are well aware of the challenges and time constraints faced.
The term 'Scope' indicates the classification of greenhouse gas emission. Scope 1 = direct emissions, Scope 2 = indirect, andScope 3 = value chain, defined as follows:
Scope 1
Direct GHG emissions from operations owned or controlled by the reporting company, e.g. emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels from heating and vehicles.
Scope 2
Indirect GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, e.g. emissions from the combustion of fossil fuel used to produce electricity.
Scope 3
Indirect GHG emissions from the value chain, essentially purchases from suppliers where you have no direct control over their carbon emissions. Although our '2024 Discussion Paper', which can be found via www.arieshub.co.uk > Members > Standard, is a little out of date, this is a good starting point if you are new and want to understand the background, consensus, aims, risks, and opportunities.
We have since updated the standard, definitions, and templates to make them clearer and easier to follow. Reference to 'carbon neutral' and 'offsetting' have been removed as they are not a requirement of ARIES. We want all available funding and investment to go into carbon reduction first, and for initial effort to be focused on reducing the Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) carbon emission, which are within your direct control.
To successfully navigate this, please ignore Scope 3 until you are familiar with Scope 1 and Scope 2. The Carbon Reduction Management Plan Template, which you can access via www.arieshub.co.uk, includes the data required to calculate emissions based on kw/h and mileage.
Some hesitation around this is understandable. However, one thing is clear, if we are to succeed in our purpose of reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, everyone needs to get on board.
